He has held several key positions in the Government of India including Secretary to the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India. He has also served as the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) from November 2014 to September 2016.
Moreover, he has presided over the conceptualization and implementation of India’s National Solar Mission, which forms the basis of the latest ambitious target of 100,000 MW Solar capacity with a 40,000 MW Solar Rooftop.

A Noted Author
Besides his administrative expertise, Deepak Gupta’s passion for writing has produced two exceptional books. He has authored Small Things Matter-Key to Good Governance, and The Steel Frame A History of the IAS.
In an interview with the IAS officer Anudeep Durishetty, Mr Gupta has stated the idea of writing The Steel Frame A History of the IAS took shape when he was the Chairman of UPSC. As part of trying to build a documentation centre, he started reading about the history of the IAS and the ICS. He found a fascinating story over two centuries about the origins of the service, how its ethos and structure evolved, and what, by constitutional design, its role was intended to be.
He thought he would give a short holistic picture since most are unaware of all this. There is a lot of literature on the British period and even post-independence. Accessing this was a big problem. He has suggested that the Academy get all this at one place on a continuing basis. He opines that the IAS has a very important role to play in governance in India and we officers must measure up to the task. The book is also a call for this. All of this has been explained in the Preface.
