Career Options after Clearing FMGE

Many people have this conception that after completing their MBBS from abroad they don’t have many career options in India other than clinical practices and teaching. This is a wrong perception as there are several other lucrative options that an MBBS graduate can opt for as a career. Nowadays, medicine is as vast as any other field. There are a plethora of options to choose from according to your interest. First, you need to qualify the FMG exam and also have to complete your 1-year internship, only then you are eligible to work in India. This blog is an attempt to familiarize you with a list of 9 career options you can select from post MBBS and after FMG exam.

1. MD/MS/Diploma

After MBBS, the most commonly chosen path by people who wish to continue their medical career is MD/ MS/Diploma. This Post-Graduation course can be obtained in various specialties like general surgery, gynecology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and many more. To get admission, a candidate is required to appear in the NEET PG exam which is held every year. Foreign medical students must attempt NEET PG after passing FMG exam. MD/MS is 3-year degree courses whereas the diploma is a 2-year program. MD/MS prepares you as a specialist doctor which is a need of the hour for always.

2. Diplomate of National Board (DNB)

Diplomate of National Board (DNB) is the second-best option for MBBS graduates who wish to continue with their dreams of becoming a specialist doctor. DNB is a PG diploma course offered by NBE i.e. National Board of Examinations, and it is recognized by the MCI. However, there are a few problems associated with DNB. The first problem is that DNB has a low passing rate depending on your course and hospital from which you have completed your course. Secondly, many hospitals give preference to MD/MS candidates as compared to DNB candidates. The third one is DNB course is provided mostly in private hospitals where the candidate gets less exposure as compared to Government hospitals, particularly in surgical branches.

3. Combined Medical Services (CMS)

Candidates who wish to enter into Government institutions like Railways, Municipal Corporations as Medical Officers can opt for CMS. UPSC is the body that is responsible for conducting CMS examination every year in July/August. Candidates can take this exam after clearing their final year of the MBBS program. CMS is a good option if you wish to be a part of the administrative workforce of the hospital and is also a nice option if you want a permanent job with the Government.

4. Civil Services

MBBS graduates are also eligible for the most honored services of the nation. Candidates can join the civil services (IRS/IAS/ IFS/IPS) post MBBS. UPSC is the exam conducting body that conducts civil services exam every year. This is a good career option but patient dealing will halt.

5. MBA

Nowadays, the demand for Doctors with an MBA degree has increased with pharmaceutical companies and many private hospitals. Because of this high demand, MBA institutions are absorbing doctors in their programs. Institutes that offer MBAs such as FMS Delhi, IIM's, MDI Gurgaon, IBS Hyderabad, XLRI Jamshedpur absorb students depending on the merit list of CAT exam that is conducted every year. 6. Clinical Research

Research in India is one of the less preferred and less rated options but there are an immense need and demand for this field. Many institutes offer research opportunities like ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research), CCMB (Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology), CIMAP, St. John's Research Institute. You can also join the WHO. Many institutes even offer a degree in Ph.D. Such institutes are PGI, AIIMS, NIMHANS, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai (TIFR).

7. Masters in Health Administration (MHA)

MHA is a 3-year Post-Graduate degree (M.D.) in Health Administration that enables medical students to acquire the skills that are needed to manage big specialty hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, etc. MHA can be considered as a career option that will pay you back in loads.

8. M.Tech in Biomedical Engineering and Biological Sciences

Another option for which MBBS graduates can go is opting for M.tech where again there is no need to attend the patients. This course is offered in the IIT's for students who want to pursue their careers in developing medical machines, inventing medical machines, and instruments for providing better health care.

9. Masters in Medical Science and Technology (MMST) 

IIT also offers MMST that deals with Medical biotechnology, Bioinformatics, healthcare imaging, etc. MMST is also a good option after the completion of MBBS.
